Bangkok residents back strict weapons laws

Metropolitan police officers and Bangkok residents showed support for the strict implementation of laws against illegal weapons, a recent survey revealed.

According to the ABAC poll, an overwhelming 92 percent of the respondents agreed to be searched and arrested in the event that they are found to be carrying unlicensed firearms. The survey was conducted on 1833 respondents, 441 of which were members of the Bangkok city police force. The remaining respondents were Bangkok city residents.

The poll, conducted from July 25 to August 3, further revealed that people are banking on law enforcement to alleviate their fear of crime.

Besides illegal possession of firearms, the respondents also wanted stricter laws on motorists driving past the speed limit and impose sanctions on night clubs and entertainment spots that continue to operate beyond the allowed time, the Nation reported.

Last month a man was arrested in Huay Kwang with an arsenal of grenades and ammunition,  while earlier this week a stash of grenades and an AK-47 was found on a bus at Moh Chit station.
