Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra vowed to pursue more sustainable development for the capital in the wake of Thailand’s worst flooding in decades.
Governor Sukhumbhand, speaking at the 5th Save Our Planet global warming conference, set a goal of reducing emissions by 15 percent this year. He said that the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) will work to increase public transportation, better handle garbage and waste water, and add more parks to the city.
Sukhumbhand admitted that Bangkok still needs to better its flood prevention plan and system of tunnels, dykes, and levees.
The Save Our Planet eco-conference, part of BOI Fair 2012, was organized by Asean Affairs magazine. Swarup Roy, founder of the magazine and the conference, put it succinctly in his opening remarks when he said that people need to “stop raping and pillaging mother earth.”
It’s unclear whether any concrete plans on how to reduce climate change came out of the event, but it can’t hurt that important people are talking about it.
