Bangkok Police have launched a “Traffic Police” app for real-time traffic status checks on mobile devices.
The app was developed in conjunction with mobile carrier Dtac and Samart Multimedia and is available from the Apple App Store and the Android Market for free.
Metropolitan Police Bureau Commissioner Lt-General Winai Thongsong said that the information will be delayed by about five minutes, according to the website Asia Pacific FutureGov.
“The app is to make things easier Bangkok road commuters and to provide effective and up-to-date e-services to citizens,” Winai said.
Stranded drivers can also tap an emergency call button on the app to alert police without even dialing a number.
Samart Multimedia Managing Director Subhasiddhi Rakkasikorn said that the app was downloaded 69,391 times from the App store and 6,913 times from the Android Market within a month of its launch in mid-February.
“Traffic Police” will probably have a tough time dislodging Google Traffic & Transit as the most popular traffic check technology in Thailand though, as Thais use the Google program at one of the highest rates in the world.
