Bangkok City hall is urging some 2,500 building managers to comply with safety inspection procedures by Thursday, October 25 or be meted a THB10,000 fine as well as a 3-month jail term.
Prawet Councilor Kittipol Cherdchukij said building managers are expected to file a request for inspection with the building control division of the Metropolitan Public Works, the Nation reported. Engineers would then visit the building and thoroughly review it for compliance with safety measures and protocols.
Should the review team find something amiss, experts will be leaving recommendations to fix the problem and conduct spot checks to see if the repairs had been made. Violation of building safety procedures is punishable by three months imprisonment and fines.
Several high profile fires earlier this year – including at the FICO building near Asoke intersection and the Grand Park Avenue Hotel on Sukhumvit 22 – prompted calls for Bangkok City Hall to do more about building safety.
