Bangkok canals draining, Bang Bua Thong submerged

The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority has begun attempting to drain floodwater from the Chao Phraya River through the capital’s canals.

FROC director Pol Gen Promnok gave a televised warning for the Lak Si and Don Muang area of Bangkok to prepare for flooding. Pracha said that the Chulalongkorn water gate on the Rapeepat canal may not be able to block rising runoff and that residents of the two areas should move their belongings a meter above ground, according to the Bangkok Post.

The Bang Bua Thong area of Nonthaburi is completely submerged as of yesterday Oct. 20, and the FROC brought 100 boats to the area last night to rescue stranded victims, according to the NNT.

Bangkokians fearful of flooding began parking their cars on expressways around the city yesterday, snarling traffic. Elevated roadways that have become de facto parking lots include Chaeng Wattana, Ratchayothin, Prachanukul, Wong Sawang, Sai Mai Road, Ram Inthra Roads, Kaset Intersection, Some of the Prachachuen tollgate, Rama VII bridge, Srirat Expressway, Rama VI Expressway, Ram Inthra Expressway near Watcharaphon Intersection and the Thupatemee and Ratchavipha, the Nation reported.

Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commissioner Panu Kerdlarppol said that vehicles that have to be towed will be fined between THB500 and THB1,000.
