Bangkok will be on high alert for the Songkran Thai New Year Festival from April 12-15, in the wake of deadly bombings in Southern Thailand.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) will increase security measures after car bombings in Yala and Hat Yai last weekend, a senior BMA official told MCOT.
BMA City Law Enforcement Department director Kramol Olarawat said that city hall will mobilize 1,240 law enforcement staff from the city’s 50 district office to help reinforce police during Songkran.
Many Bangkokians will leave the city for their hometowns, but visitors will also be flowing into the city for the festival, he said.
The BMA reinforcements will also be guarding bus terminals, shopping and tourists areas, and other areas deemed to be potential targets.
