Bangkok apartment raid yields massive ammo stash

An ammunition stash of more than 10,000 bullets, four hand grenades and 15 clips for M-16 rifles was recovered by authorities after raiding the abandoned apartment of a former government official on Monday night.

The raid took place at the Panya Rarm Intra Ua-arthorn project in Klong Sam Wa district. The apartment is said to have been owned by a former deputy governor of the Nakhon Pathom province .

Police said the official will be questioned later about the presence of such a large cache of ammunition.

Pol Maj Gen Prinya Chansuriya, however noted that the retired government official may have been unaware that his house was used as ammo storage. He said that the subletting of this apartment had been delegated to a golf caddy. Also, judging by the appearance of the place, the apartment had not been lived in for years.

Pol Maj Gen Prinya said all of the recovered ammunition is still usable.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung told the Bangkok Post that the ammo stash may be linked to a rogue policeman whom they have had in custody since 2010. Mr Chalerm theorized that the ammunition was supposed to be exchanged for drugs in Northern Thailand.
