Alleged acid attacker felt disrespected by society

A self-confessed meth addict has admitted to carrying out nearly 30 “acid attacks” with corrosive substances on people in Bangkok, police said yesterday.

Rachan Theerakitnukul, a poor 49-year-old tricycle-riding scavenger, carried out the attacks because he felt disrespected by society, acting Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Pol Maj Gen Kamronwit Thoopkrachang said, according to the Bangkok Post.

Rachan was arrested on Sunday while riding his tricycle cart on Intamara Soi 39 in Din Daeng. Police confiscated drug paraphernalia and bottles of drain and toilet cleaner. Before the arrest rumors and reports of acid attacks around Bangkok had been growing to a cacophony.

Pol Maj Gen Kamronwit said Mr. Rachan confessed to almost 30 attacks – 10 in Saphan Kwai, seven or eight near Pratunam and Ratchaprasong, three or four near Victory Monument, and five in Lat Phrao.

Several of the victims of the attacks identified Rachan and he was forced to perform the obligatory crime re-enactment yesterday.

Victims suffered burns and skin irritation.
