AirAsia wants to turn Thailand into a transportation hub

Yesterday, AirAsia founder Tony Fernandes met with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to discuss the future of Thai air travel, a future which, if shaped by Fernandes’s desires, will be heavily influenced by AirAsia.

The Nation reported that in the meeting, Yingluck outlined Thailand’s commitment to building out its regional air infrastructure by improving airport facilities in such locations as Chiang Mai, Krabi and Udon Thani.

For AirAsia’s part, Fernandes made promises to turn Thailand into a regional transportation hub, especially after the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

Fernandes has previously pushed Thailand to turn Don Mueang airport into a regional, low-cost hub for air travel.

At the end of her meeting with Fernandes, Yingluck assigned Thailand’s transport minister to discuss with AirAsia the possibility of forming multiple connecting points between Thailand and its Southeast Asian neighbors.
