An African man broke his leg jumping off an apartment balcony in an attempt to escape a drug raid in Bangkok’s Bang Kapi district yesterday Feb. 29.
Lawic Uwadiegwu, a Guinean national, did not escape arrest.
The raid was conducted in a joint operation between the Thai Narcotics Suppression Bureau, Immigration Police Bureau officers, and the US Drug Enforcement Administration, according to MCOT.
About 80 officers targeted 12 rooms of an apartment building in Bang Kapi and found marijuana and crystal meth. Police had been tipped off that the building was being used by addicts as a place to store and use drugs.
They found five kilograms of marijuana in one room and in another came across a suspect trying to flush crystal meth down the toilet.
Uwadiegwu’s girlfriend told police that he had smuggled marijuana into Thailand to sell to tourists and customers from nearby areas.
Police also detained 10 citizens from African nations, some with expired tourist visas and some without passports. The ten people were sent to the Immigration Bureau for further questioning.
Photos of the raid can be found at MCOT’s website.
