AFP: US Navy turned away from flood relief by mixed messages

AFP is reporting that the US Navy pulled back ships that were meant to help with flood relief in Thailand after getting mixed messages from the Thai government.

The USS George Washington aircraft carrier and a few other ships were in the area and ready to help, but never got a formal request.

“We are ready to help but we haven’t got a request,” said a US defense official, who wanted to remain anonymous. “There were two channels (in the Thai government). One was saying ‘yes’ and one was saying ‘no.’”
