Virologist warns free-trade area could bring infectious diseases

And now, further adventures in hypochondria:

Dr. Prasert Thongchareon, one of the Kingdom’s leading virologists, has pointed out that in addition to free-flowing trade, the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), set for a 2015 launch, may bring with it a brand new load of infectious diseases. According to the doctor, freer movement of people and goods within southeast Asia may allow for previously regional scourges to make an easy leap between countries.

Chief amongst the doctor’s worries is diphtheria, which was eradicated from Thailand nearly 20 years ago.

The Nation has a fuller accounting of Dr. Prasert’s predictions, which you are welcome to peruse while we double-check our walk-in closet full of hand sanitizer.
