A second storm after Gaemi? Oy vey!

A second storm is projected to batter Thailand with wind and rain around Oct. 20 after Tropical Storm Gaemi has passed, said Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut.

Gaemi is expected to hit Thailand tomorrow.

The second storm of the cyclone season will be named Phrapiroon (a Thai name) and looks set to drench parts of every region of Thailand, the Bangkok Post reported.

The Royal Irrigation Department is speeding up the drainage of roughly 44 million cubic meters of water per day from the plains on the east side of the Chao Phraya River, he said.

National Disaster Warning Centre director Somsak Khaosuwan said, however, that the second storm is forecast to weaken into a simple low pressure area which will result in less rain.

Riverside communities in the lower Northeast and Central region including Bangkok have been warned to prepare for possible flooding from an overflowing Chao Phraya when Gaemi hits this weekend.

Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said that City Hall would be monitoring Gaemi very closely this weekend and giving updates on potential flooding every half hour (in Thai) at http://dds.bangkok.go.th.

Sukhumbhand said he was particularly concerned about flooding on the eastern side of the Chao Phraya River.
