627 communities in Bangkok flooded, military calls for state of emergency

627 communities in Bangkok are flooded with water levels up to 70 centimeters, the Nation reported todayOct. 15.

The hardest-hit area is the Klong Sam Wa district in eastern Bangkok, while some areas in inner Bangkok including Phra Nakhon, Dusit, Sathorn, and Yannawa are also flooded. Heavy rain fell around Bangkok last night from around 6pm to 10pm and more is expected today in combination with heavy flow from the North passing through the city.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority has identified 96 schools as potential shelters for up to 19,400 evacuees.

Meanwhile, the military is increasingly looking to lobby Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to declare a state of emergency, a source told the Nation. The call for a state of emergency, which would supposedly increase the efficiency of flood relief efforts in Bangkok, comes after angry citizens in Pathum Thani destroyed flood barriers.

Residents in the capital are increasingly confused about the flooding after a government mix-up Thursday Oct. 13 led to a false evacuation call in northern Bangkok.
