Yesterday, Benja Louichareon, director-general of the Customs Department, announced that Customs officers had seized 2,000 live snakes that smugglers were trying to move out of Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Hong Kong.
Acting on a tip-off, Customs and Parks Department officials inspected 203 boxes that a front company – AK International Co. – had shipped from Thailand to Hong Kong. The company claimed that its shipment contained fruit, but inside the boxes, officials found a treasure trove of snakes, whose value they estimated at THB600,000.
The Bangkok Post reports that the snakes were most likely bound for China, where eating snake is believed to increase sexual performance.
