Police hope new, more organized traffic tickets mean violators may actually pay fines

An updated system and design for Thai traffic tickets is coming in December and police hope it will lower offenses and increase accountability.

From December on, traffic rule-breakers who don’t pay their tickets will have their driving scores reduced. If they are reduced enough, their license can be suspended, reported Thai PBS.

The new tickets will feature the date and time prominently as well as an easy-to-read block of offenses that the officer simply needs to check off.

Thailand has the second highest rate of road fatalities in the world, and Assistant Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police Pol. Lt. Gen. Withaya Prayongphan noted that three Thais die each hour in road accidents. In response to this, police have increased the penalties for speeding and other traffic infractions.

Another issue with the current ticketing system is that few people ever actually pay their fines. They don’t feel that they have to since there is such poor record-keeping and few penalties for skipping out on a fine.
