New ferry boats afloat in Khlong Saen Saep

Two new commuter boats will be tested out in Khlong Saen Saep this month before they are put into full-time service. The new boats are supposedly safer, feature more seating and should be easier to get in and out of.

The boats were designed by the Thai Marine department and Krobkrua Khonsong company.

The new seating arrangement on the boats mimics city bus seats seats with long rows of bench seats divided by a middle aisle. Each of the new boats can hold 104 seated passengers. There is a staircase on each side of the boats, reported Thai PBS

For safety reasons, passengers will not be able to stand along the edges of the new boats, which also feature diesel engines to avoid the puff of black smoke that is usually coming off the rear of the khlong boats.
