Thailand’s raging COVID-19 outbreak is finally subsiding, according to today’s update from the pandemic task force.

As the nation fully reopens to travel this week, its new daily infections fell below 10,000 for a second day, just a month after peaking at nearly 30,000.

Health officials today reported just 9,721 cases, a level not seen since early February. Monday’s 9,331 was well below the 28,379 reported April 1.

The stress on the health care system is also falling – 118,567 remained hospitalized according to today’s report, or roughly two-thirds of available beds. There were 77 additional deaths reported.

Bangkok still counts the most daily cases at 3,649, followed by Buriram’s 372 and Samut Prakan’s 302.

Sunday marked the first day that arriving in Thailand did not require RT-PCR tests.

In March, the task force announced that the COVID-19 health crisis would be downgraded from pandemic to endemic status come July, over two years after it began, if everything went as forecast.

To reach that goal, health officials said at the time that new daily cases must not exceed 2,000 in June.
