Mysterious bag contains suspicious $200,000

Police were left puzzling over a mysterious bag left at a hotel in the Ratchathewi district holding a grotesque amount of cash yesterday.

Officers were summoned on Sunday to investigate a suspicious suitcase, inside of which they found a small safe, inside of which they found a load of USD100 banknotes totalling $200,000 (THB6.4 million).

Although they suspect the notes are fakes, authorities have yet to confirm they are, according to Bangkok Post reports. Besides the banknotes, the contents of the suitcase included a bottle containing a mysterious chemical and a packet of white powder.

Police suspect the money could be linked to one of those notorious “black money” scams in which con artists pretend a stash of black paper is real money by “cleaning” one of them into clean currency.

The suitcase and safe were found unclaimed at the luggage service counter, and the owner of the small hotel became suspicious when she noticed the safe inside the partially ripped brown suitcase.

She immediately notified authorities fearing that the luggage contained contraband.
