MRT decides to hold off fare increase (for now)

After last week’s announcement of a looming MRT fare hike, its operator yesterday said they’ve decided to hold off the increase until October.

Last Friday, Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Co. Ltd. (BEM) had announced that the fare increase for the MRT Blue Line was to take effect from July 3. The base and maximum price points will remain the same — THB16 to THB42 — but there will be small increases within that zone, with some trips jumping THB1.

Specifically, fares are set to jump for journeys of five, eight or 11 stations in length.

The new fare to take effect on Oct. 3.

But that’s all on hold now (until October, at least). Operators yesterday said there had been a change of plan “to support the government’s policy to lighten the load” for Bangkok’s citizens. The fare increases are now set to take effect on Oct. 3.

We definitely aren’t complaining about the delay — the later the better,  particularly since a study last year suggested that Bangkok is amongst the worst cities in which to take public transportation.
