More than 2,000 deaths on Thai roads so far this year, says insurance firm

There have been 2,315 deaths and 152,438 injuries on the roads in Thailand so far this year.

Insurance company Road Accident Victims Protection Company revealed its findings today, covering the period from Jan. 1 to March 13, Thai PBS reported.

The company did not elaborate on which roads or highways had the most fatalities, or which types of vehicles were involved.

But it stated that most accidents were caused by tiredness from driving for long hours, particularly drivers on chartered tour buses.

The Ministry of Public Health’s deputy permanent secretary Suwanchai Watanayingcharoenchai said its study on fatalities from road accidents in 2016 showed there were 104 cases of road accidents involving public buses, resulting in 49 deaths and 675 people injured,

The Road Accident Victims Protection Company added that bus drivers involved in fatal accidents were also likely to have little experience of their routes and tended to drive at high speeds.

Drivers should take rest at regular intervals, keep their driving speeds below 80 kph, and avoid starting their journey at night, it recommended, while passengers should also fasten their seat belts.
