Yesterday, Metropolitan police raided Wat Wichit Karn Nimitr in the Phasi Charoen district and carried out so-called “purple-pee drug tests.” They took two monks, who showed positive results, to Srivichai Hospital for more thorough testing.
Out of 36 monks tested, 38-year-old Kriangkrai Saisood and 42-year-old Weerapat Inthawangso failed the tests, designed to determine the presence of methamphetamine and crystal meth. Police subsequently found drug equipment and 10 porn DVDs and at Kriangkrai’ residence. Kriangkrai admitted to consuming drugs, saying that he bought them from teens in the neighborhood.
Meanwhile, Weerapat, who refused to any wrongdoing, claimed that consumption of energy drinks was the cause of the positive sign in the test. Kriangkrai and Weerapat will be taken to the hospital to identify the substance found in their urine.
According to Dailynews, the raid was fueled by a civilian tip-off that monks were using drugs inside the temple. The tests are called “purple-pee” tests since a test kit will turn purple once it absorbs meth-tainted urine.
