Money Talks: “Shutdown” not good for people, business

Shuttered shops, quiet airports and suffering markets. Apart from whistle and newspaper sales, political instability ain’t so good for business.

Representatives of the business community have asked anti-government protesters to call off their proposed “shutdown” of the capital on Monday because of the damage it will cause to the economy and livelihoods of its people.

In a joint statement, the Thai Bankers Association, Federation of Thai Industries and Thai Chamber of Commerce urged all sides to find peaceful means of resolving their differences without taking actions that could lead to violence.

The three organizational giants of the private sector also decided to host a forum this week for political parties, the courts, election commission, academics and others to hash out possible alternative solutions before Monday’s action.

Industries federation President Payoongsak Chartsutthiphol said preparations must be made by business to weather the storms of unrest by finding alternative production sources and distribution networks less dependent on Bangkok, Thai PBS reported.
