Current and former military comprise a majority of unelected assembly appointed by the junta and officially endorsed, according to an the official list published late last night.
More than 100 army officers and more than 10 police officers were appointed to the 200-member body of the National Legislative Assembly, which will meet for the first time next week on Thursday. From now on readers will (once again) be expected to automatically recognize, understand and differentiate “NLA” from the NCPO, NBTC, FT-HD, PDRC and WTFPWN.
The NLA is also almost entirely male, with only 10 women selected, according to political writer Saksith Saiyasombut’s analysis. Civil servants, former senators and academics account for about one third of the body’s nonmilitary appointees.
One of its first tasks will be choosing a new prime minister, which will likely be guided by the junta’s “reform council,” which it also hand-picked.
The junta will retain its authority under the interim constitutional charter it drafted last month, which also insulated its authority by stipulating that any actions it takes are automatically legal.
Before we bomb you with all of their names, here’s a handy visualization of the National Legislative Assembly make-up courtesy of Saksith:
