Lionel Messi has been named as one of three nominees for the UEFA player of the year 2012/2013. He will be up against Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery.

Messi lost last year’s award to teammate Andres Iniesta by two votes.

Messi and Iniesta are currently with FC Barcelona in Bangkok and the popularity of the club was highlighted last night when 15,000 fans turned out to watch the team train at Rajamangala Stadium.

FC Barcelona are definitely winning over the hearts of Thai fans, and showing other clubs who visited Thailand last month how easy it is to give the fans what they want. Messi and reserve keeper Jose Pinto met with children with disabilities yesterday at an event organized by Unicef, Neymar took part in an event in Siam Square on behalf of Nike and Cesc Fabregas, Neymar, Pedro, Alex Song and Dani Alves attended an auction and gala dinner at the Okura Prestige Hotel last night.
