With megaprojects in the pipeline, government worries about labor shortage

Yesterday, Labor Minister Phadermchai Sasomsub gave voice to the government’s concerns about a lack of labor in Thailand, and the possible effect that this shortage could have on several “megaprojects” that the government has currently in development.

Upcoming projects include changes to Thailand’s resource management scheme, water infrastructure and transportation networks. For these projects, the government will need a variety of skilled and unskilled laborers, a supply that many labor experts worry could be absent from Thailand’s strained labor market.

In preparation for the projects’ launch, Phadermchai said that the Labor Ministry had sent an inquiry to the Education Ministry, its goal being to find out whether the country’s labor capacity would be sufficient to the projects’ demands.

Phadermchai, in a statement to the National News Bureau of Thailand, said that the Labor Ministry would try to both train new workers and induce Thai citizens living abroad to return home and help with the projects.
