A 48-year-old woman, who claims to be a medium for the Mercy Goddess, or Guanyin, made headlines today when she reappeared in Chonburi in full Guanyin makeup and costume. She traveled in a golden car profusely decorated with photos of gods and prayer quotes.
Sources report that the woman’s legal name is Guanyin Lanlanphak. She adopted the moniker “Guanyin” in order to draw associations with her chosen Goddess. Her surname can be translated into “millions and millions of lives.” Guanyin told reporters that she just finished showing clemency to animals.
Her reappearance, however, both stunned and puzzled onlookers, who believed that she was still serving time in jail on charges of theft. Last year, she was arrested for stealing an iPod and a smartphone from a devotee in Chonburi.
