Mask-less sex workers worry public, get fined for prostitution instead

Two sex workers were fined THB1,000 (US$32) each today after a clip spread showing them not wearing face masks while propositioning potential clients.

The women, who were not identified, were called into a police station in northern metro Bangkok for questioning after they were seen offering sexual services to a man in a car. They were fined THB1,000 (US$32) each for violating Section 5 of the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act by propositioning someone in public with sexual services, according to Col. Wiwat Assawawiboon of the Thanyaburi police.

The incident was said to happen in what’s colloquially known as Soi Pan Sook (“sharing happiness”) for its readily available sex in Pathum Thani province.

The sex workers were initially criticized online for not wearing face masks. Some accused them of working after 11pm in violation of the nighttime curfew which expired this morning.

Wiwat said that after investigating and questioning the women, police concluded they had violated curfew. The women also told police that they usually wore face masks, but took them off when talking customers.
