Mars comes the closest to Earth in 11 years tonight

While you’re on your way home from your typical Tuesday routine, take a minute to look up the sky tonight.

The Red Planet is coming closer to Earth than it has in 11 years, facing towards the east. Stargazers should be able to see Mars at its brightest for the year, and even spot surface details with a telescope, according to National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT).

Dr. Saran Posayachinda, deputy director of NARIT, said that tonight Mars will come as close as 75.28 million kilometers from earth tonight, and in July 2017, the Red Planet will come even closer at 57.59 million kilometers away.

Three public viewing events will be held in Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima and Chachoengsao provinces tonight while Bangkokians gotta rely on their naked eyes for now.
