A Prachinburi man died of electrocution while trying to grab an envelope of money tied to a sign that was caught on high-voltage overhead cables yesterday afternoon.

The man, identified as Nattawut Panompa, 20, heard that around Songkran, a foundation had released a balloon sign as a promotion. Attached to the sign was an envelope containing THB9,999 (about US$294). Nattawut spotted the balloon sign strung onto the cables above Suwannasorn Road, so he rented a crane truck for THB2,000 to retrieve the envelope.

Paramedics performed CPR on Nuttawat, but he didn’t survive, reported Manager.

His girlfriend, Kanittha Chang-on, 19, warned Natthawut many times that he would get electrocuted, but he didn’t listen.

Later paramedics took down the sign, along with the envelope, to prevent more people from getting hurt. They only found THB825 cash inside, leading one to believe that either rescuers had pocketed the remainder or the organization had never fronted the amount to begin with.

In the end, the cash was given toward Nuttawat’s funeral.
