Wear a mask, submit to a temperature check and government tracking is all Bangkok needs to return to its cherished malls today.

After announcing yesterday that shoppers would need to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test, Central Group today scrapped the entry requirements at the last minute.

A source at the largest retail conglomerate who declined to be identified told Coconuts Bangkok today that the company abruptly dropped the requirements without giving a reason.

CentralwOrld announced this morning that it will only require shoppers to wear masks, have their body temperatures scanned and check in with the Thaichana tracking app, in addition to maintaining social distance inside.

Central’s competitors including The Mall Group and Siam Piwat issued no such requirements.

Starting today, shopping malls in the 29 hardest-hit provinces including Bangkok are allowed to reopen most shops except for cinemas, karaoke parlors, fitness centers, swimming pools and tutoring centers. Department stores are allowed to open until 8pm.
