Mahout charged over death of tourist killed by elephant

A mahout has been charged over the death of a Scottish tourist killed by an elephant in Koh Samui.

Bophut Police said the mahout, a Myanmar national, had been charged over inattentiveness resulting in death and injury.

Gareth Crowe, 36, was killed on Monday during an elephant trek when the elephant, Golf, became violent.

The elephant threw Mr Crowe and his 16-year-old daughter off before trampling the man and stabbing him in the chest with his tusk, killing the man instantly. The teenager escaped with injuries.

The mahout, who was not identified, told police the elephant attacked when he was helping the pair take photos.

He said he believed the flash from the camera caused the elephant to become violent and attack the group.

Bophut Police station director Pol Col Thewet Pluemsut said images from the tourist’s camera show the moment when the mahout neglected his duty to take photos for both tourists.

The mahout will face prosecution at Koh Samui Provincial Court today.
