After last night’s celebration of the Loy Krathong festival, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reported collecting a total of 841,327 krathong floats from the city’s waterways today.
Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said today that the workers officially finished the cleanup around 5am. The floats were collected from the Chao Phraya River, canals, and ponds inside public parks across the city where Loy Krathong festival was held.
Out of all the krathongs collected, 796,444 or 94.7 percent were made of natural or degradable materials, and only 44,883 or 5.3 percent were synthetic foam floats.
“I’d like to thank you folks for realizing the importance of the environment and for your cooperation to opt for natural krathongs,” he said via a Facebook post this afternoon.
The governor said that the natural krathongs will be turned into fertilizer at a factory in Nong Kham district while foam waste will be buried.
He urged citizens to not use foam to make krathong floats next year.
