Lights out: Bangkok Earth Hour saved THB8 million in electricity

Bangkok’s Earth Hour on Saturday night saved the country THB8 million in electricity, according to the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA).

Residents were encouraged to switch off non-essential lights for the Earth Hour movement during 8.30pm – 9.30pm on Saturday night, while the city turned off the light at several streets including Silom, Khaosan, Ratchadaphisek, and Yaowarat.

Lights at Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Arun, The Giant Swing and Rama VIII bridge were also temporarily turned off.

The MEA said BAngkok saved 2,020 megawatts of electricity from its maximum electricity usage, and reduced 1,057 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

The Earth Hour campaign started by WWF aimed to promote sustainability and raise awareness of global warming.

Thailand has taken part in 60 Earth Hour campaigns during 2009 – 2015, saving 12,324 MW of electricity, THB41 million, and 7,114 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the carbon absorption of 790,000 trees.
