Lightning strike to transmission tower caused last week’s blackout

The National News Bureau of Thailand is reporting that a lightning strike to a transmission tower in Phetchaburi province is responsible for the blackout that spread across 14 provinces in the south of Thailand last week.

Thana Putarungsi, Deputy Director of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), said that the Authority would add more transmission cables to its network in order to prevent future blackouts.
