The nightclub that Bangkok has a love-hate relationship with celebrated its one-year anniversary last night.
Levels has become arguably the most popular nightclub on Sukhumvit Soi 11 since opening next to the Aloft hotel last June. Despite mixed opening reviews, Levels surprised everyone by surpassing long-established destinations like Bed Supperclub and Q-Bar in nightly intake – even putting pressure on other Bangkok nightclubs to compete with its no-cover door policy.
Architecturally, the nightclub is an impressive space, with a circular bar in the middle and glossy chandeliers. But it wasn’t an instant hit, by any means. The massive size started out as a disadvantage – making it difficult to fill with people and also appear full in those early days. Levels only really started to take off after a few months, coming up with regular theme nights, like “Sexy Pyjamas”, “Burlesque” and the controversial yet crowd-pleasing “Six Pack Fridays” where hot guys strutted around in bowties and no shirts
Now, draws in a full dance floor nightly, a solid blend of Thai girls who love to get dolled up, expat guys and whole lot of tourists. The nightclub has even brought a fair list of international acts into its back clubroom, including the likes of Boy George, Laidback Luke and Sander Van Doorn. Nightly, DJs spin commercial pop and hip hop in the main room, and deep house in the smaller outdoor, lounge area near the entrance.
Levels celebrated its success with a blowout one-year birthday bash last night, starting at 9pm with open bar until 10 pm. As usual, the entrance was free and the nightclub was packed with guests, many wearing gold as per the evening’s dress code. There were live performances, dancers and a line-up of DJs who really got the crowd going.
It’s safe to say, this nightclub could be around for many more birthdays to come. With Bed Supperclub closing its doors in August, Levels is a definite contender for the throne of Sukhumvit 11.
