Six decades after a single film made Kanchanaburi a global travel destination for its dark days during World War II, a funeral was held yesterday for one of the last known British prisoners of war to work on the infamous bridge forever known as the “Bridge Over the River Kwai.”
According to The Blackpool Gazette:
Gunner Harry Motteram, a member of the 137th Field Regiment, was captured in Singapore in 1942 before being forced to work as a prisoner of war on the Burma Railway and Bridge on the River Kwai.
The last member of his regiment, Motteram died May 1 at 94.
