Kratong Cleanup: 800K kratongs to bury in landfills

The numbers are in from Sunday’s Loy Kratong, and they are surprisingly precise.

Exactly 865,415 kratongs were collected from 28 locations by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, 50,939 or 5.6 percent fewer than last year.Of those, more than 100,000 were made of synthetic materials such as foam and plastic.

About 80 percent of kratongs were made from banana leaves and other natural materials which cause less environmental harm.

All the spent kratongs were moved to three Bangkok landfills in the On Nut, Nong Khaem, and Sai Mai districts for their ceremonial burial, Thairath reported.
