South Korea beat Thailand 3-2 in their first round Davis Cup Asia-Oceania tie, with a victory in the reverse singles on Sunday enough to spoil the hosts’ hopes of a final day comeback.
The visitors came in with a slim 2-1 lead after two days of competition, with the Thais hoping to overturn the deficit.
But Chung Hyeon snatched away Thailand’s chances, breezing past Danai Udomchoke 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in the early Sunday game — giving the visitors an unassailable 3-1 lead and registering his second singles win of the tie.
Warit Sombutnark later reduced the margin with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lim Yong-Kyu.
Warit’s straight sets loss to Chung Hyeon on Friday was the second singles defeat for Thailand on an opening day which left them with it all to do.
On Saturday brothers Sanchai and Sonchat Ratiwatana kept the tie alive with gruelling five set win in the doubles match over Korea’s Nam Ji-Sung and Song Min-Kyu.
But the tie slipped away as Danai Udomchoke lost his match on Sunday morning.
