Two African lions celebrating Valentine’s Day in the most natural way possible had their lovemaking broadcast to the world this morning by zoo officials.
A large lion named P’Nayak was filmed mounting his lover, called Nong Caesar, before finishing and striding away in footage posted by the zoo in Korat. During their short-lived sex session, a man’s voice can be heard loudly counting the eight seconds that pass.
“This video clip is made for entertainment purposes only. There is no intention to infringe copyright or privacy in any way, and no intention to communicate in a bad way,” read the caption by veterinarian Ampika Thongpakdi of the Animal Conservation and Research Institute Zoological Park Organization.
Just why did the zoo need to share this fleeting moment of feline fornication? Why, to educate the public about African lion mating season.
When in heat, African lions have a lot of sex. They will typically mate every 20 minutes to 30 minutes, though each session lasts only a few seconds. At this pace, they can breed up to 50 times a day. This frequency stimulates ovulation in female lions and increases their chances of becoming pregnant.
