A German Muay Thai champion who competed across Thailand before joining ISIS earlier this year may have been executed by the group for attempting to leave it.
Valdet Gashi, 29, who was originally presumed to have died fighting June 27 for the extremist militant group in Syria, was in fact killed near Aleppo for trying to escape the group, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Gashi, who fought throughout Thailand and was said to have married a Thai woman, joined ISIS this past March. The Syrian rights group said sources reported Gashi was “shocked” by ISIS almost immediately after joining and wanted to return to Germany within a month.

The group also reports one informant suggesting he may still be alive and in captivity.
Gashi was a naturalized German citizen from the former Yugoslavia.
