Khon performers keep it real in costumes for pre-wedding photos

The bride and groom usually dig out the best outfits they own for their pre-wedding photoshoot, but this couple’s best outfits are not what most people would expect.

Thai photographer Pherawit Rattanachot shared these stunning, literary-inspired, pre-wedding photos of a couple, who actually are Khon performers.

The groom is dressed up as Thotsakan, the giant with ten faces who is the ultimate villain in the classic Thai epic “Ramakien.” Meanwhile, the bride plays her part as the beautiful “Nang Sida,” the leading lady of the epic who is, at some point, kidnapped by Thotsakan.

In his phone interview with Coconuts Bangkok, the photographer said that he was initially inspired by the Thai song “Pen Pai Mai Dai (It can’t be)” by the band “The Impossible.” The song tells a story of Thotsakan, a villain who suddenly finds himself in love with the female lead Nang Sida… so he kidnaps the unwilling woman. Yep.

“I thought it was a beautiful part of the song and I fell in love with this concept,” Pherawit said.

Since the cute couple are actual Khon performers, photographer Pherawit felt that the photoshoot theme really suited them.

Asked why he chose a city skyline such as Chong Nonsi, instead of Khon theatres or Thai traditional houses, as the backdrop of the photos, he explained:

“I wanted to show the contrast between the costumes and the setting, unlike in typical wedding photos where everything correspond neatly. I wanted something different and unique. Something people have never seen before,” the photographer told Coconuts.

There are also photos captured in a forest in Phichit that plays more into the traditional theme of Ramakien. In those shots, the couple is seen in a moment of intimacy and warmth as they lovingly embrace under piles of leaves and tall, dark trees.
