Kamronwit to report to police for questioning Monday

Former Bangkok police chief Kamronwit Thoopkrachang will be called in for questioning Monday by the national police.

Police said today they are awaiting a Japanese report about its investigation into Kamronwit before interrogating him about his June 22 arrest for trying to board a plane at Narita Airport with a gun and ammunition in his bag.

Kamronwit was held for several weeks before Japanese authorities released him without charge and deported him to Thailand.

State media reports Kamronwit will be asked about the incident in Tokyo. It made no mention of questions regarding how he left Thailand with the weapon that he said belonged to him.

News that he carried the weapon onto a Thai Airways flight at Suvarnabhumi Airport was an embarrassing security lapse for an industry already under scrutiny for failing to meet aviation standards.

In response, tighter security measures were introduced Friday at Don Mueang Airport, then hastily withdrawn when they led to massive delays and inconvenience.

Kamronwit could face several charges depending on the investigation by the national police, but no one will be holding their breath.
