Juicy Scoop: Thai mango may protect against cancer and heart disease, research shows

New research from Thailand’s Naresuan University point to the delicious Mahachanok mango as an even better snack than previously thought. Sure, the mangoes are juicy, affordable, delicious, and packed with Vitamin C, but Dr. Peerasak Chaiprasart’s new research shows that they may contain a compound that works to prevent cancer, heart disease, and vision issues.

Dr. Peerasak is a professor in the agriculture department at Naresuan, a government university in the northern province of Phitsanulok, reported Thai PBS.

The Mahachanok mango is also sometimes called the sunset or rainbow mango due to the gorgeous reds, yellows, and oranges it turns when ripe.

The doctor explained that the mango contains carotenoids, the pigments responsible for its sunset hues. This natural compound has been found to help strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease reported Nation TV.

Government officials have praised Dr. Peerasak and his work, hoping that this new data will create more demand for the mango and more revenue for growers of the fruit.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha even urged Dr. Peerasak to work directly with mango farmers to teach them how they can nurture their plants to enhance the anti-cancer, heart-healthy properties of the fruit.
