Police said today that a man confessed to dismembering his lover and burying her body parts under a Bangkok expressway.

Charnwit “Don” Wongsahak, 35, was arrested Sunday evening for killing and mutilating his lover of two years at a condo on Soi Sukhumvit 115 in Samut Prakan province.

Charnwit reportedly admitted to cutting Oranan “Phim” Narathorn, 30, into seven pieces and then putting them in two black bags he buried along Prasert Manukij Road under the Chalong Rat Expressway.

The incident went viral online with #dismemberment trending on Thai Twitter today, sparked further discussion about society’s obsession with violence against women.

On Saturday, police officers the in Samrong Nuea area were notified by a housekeeper who went to clean the room. According to her, it smelled of blood and the tap in the bathroom had been left running. She suspected a murder had taken place.

On Sunday, the authorities came to search the room and found Charnwit there. He calmly confessed to murdering Oranan, they said.

According to Charnwit, both he and Oranan worked in real estate and would meet at the condo for liaisons, as he had been married to another woman for five years. Charnwit said they often fought as Oranan would not acknowledge they were in a relationship, and he worried she was seeing other men.

On Wednesday, they got into and argument and Charnwit beat Oranan to death. He stayed in the room with her body for one night. On Thursday, he went out to buy an ax, knife, and saw to cut up her body.

Charnwit left the condo Friday evening. CCTV footage showed him exiting an elevator with two large bags. Oranan was not seen with him.

Former immigration bureau chief Surachet “Big Joke” Hakpan, now of the Royal Thai Police, told reporters that Charnwit confessed and was ready to be formally questioned.
