It may be cool but no, a white winter isn’t coming

Cool weather may give cause for Bangkokians to flaunt their fashionable warm wear. And they may seize the opportunity to wrap their furry friend in that Pierre Cardin dog sweater.

Yet despite the recent cool snap and some predictions of snow, meteorologists say hell will freeze before it falls upon the kingdom.

After snow fell recently in Egypt and Vietnam, some have speculated that Thailand is on the list for an unlikely white Christmas, but experts warn not to get carried away with fantasies of building snowpeople, scratching snow angels or throwing snow balls in Thailand.

“At best we can see frozen dewdrops on high mountains like Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai,” said Capt. Somsak Khaosuwan of the National Disaster Warning Centre yesterday.

That’s some snow in the eye of Piyacheep Vatcharobol, who asserted yesterday a 90 percent likelihood that areas above 1,500 meters would experience snow due to temperatures lower than -5 degrees. The head of an amateur citizens’ emergency network, Piyacheep also explained the snow was the byproduct of an impending ice age that would correlate to a reversal of the earth’s magnetic fields.

Right.

“There is no chance for Thailand to have snow,” Meteorologist Somchai Baimoung countered.

He explained there’s not relationship between changes in the earth’s magnetism and snow, but in fact snow results from the far more mundane factors of humidity, temperature and atmospheric conditions, The Nation reported.
