It looked like a taxi from the outside. Inside was a sacred forest.

A cab driver was fined THB1,000 today for tricking his ride out with a canopy of sacred wood vines he believed would confer blessings as he moved passengers around Bangkok.

Driver Wichai Chinwong was ordered to pay a THB1,000 fine for turning his modest cab into a gnarly nest of holy vines meant to not only ward off road accidents but make him wealthy and charming. Unimpressed by this, the Land Transport Department said it fit Section 12 of the Vehicle Act’s description as a material “that could harm other people physically or mentally.”

Images of the taxi were brought to light last week by one of Wichai’s passengers.

“Yes, this is my holy taxi-riding experience,” Facebooker Pizchy’s Phaniwan wrote. “Kinda nervous.”

Apart from the fine and request to clear the snarling morass, Wichai must attend three hours of remedial taxi driver training.
