Internet scoops up 12-centimeter ‘Dictator’

A hot new action figure featuring the likeness of you know who has been selling like hot cakes on Facebook.

Pre-sales for “The Dictator” action figure announced on Nerdy And Otaku-ster sold out this afternoon hours after they were announced, to the great surprise of designer Chaiwat Searmsutee-anuwat.

“I didn’t think about it before, but everybody loves this,” he told us this afternoon. “I don’t know what the people buy it for. I don’t know, but I’m surprised about this.”

Although the identity of “The Dictator” isn’t spelled out, there are no points for identifying its inspiration.

Chaiwat is the 35-year-old graphic designer behind Tabun Studios, his hobby side-project since 2005 making bizarro action figures called “short-run art toys” by the geekerati.

He said he wasn’t setting out to make any strong political statement and was inspired by action figures made of U.S. President Barack Obama.

Whether it’s rock stars or athletes, Chaiwat said he looks for “good content” for his work, which combines his love for drawing and action figures.

“I’m happy to do this,” he said, adding that were he to see it in a shop, he’d find it “amazing and very interesting.”

The Dictator figures stand 12-centimeters tall and are made of rubber. The pre-orders were priced at THB650 each. The little dictators come in two colors: green (original) and red (special very angry edition, limited to 10 at THB,1000).

Pre-orders have stopped but seems like regular orders can be placed through July 14.

Grab it before the toys sold out, or the page gets called in for attitude-recalibration.
