Illegal hotels to be shut down, Interior Ministry plans

More than a quarter-million hotel rooms are operating illegally and will need to be registered with the government or shut down, according to proposed regulations.

Under new rules drafted by the Ministry of the Interior, owners could be imprisoned for up to a year and face a THB20,000 fine for operating illegally.

The updated code will go before the appointed legislature and ultimately the cabinet for consideration in July or August.

Surapong Techaluhwijit of the Thai Hotel Association said only 20 percent of accommodation in the kingdom hold licenses.

The new rules would likely affect the preponderance of so-called “love motels” that operate in every area and provide accommodation on an hourly basis.
