‘If there’s a next life, I hope you’ll be our son again’: Families mourn gold shop shooting victims

It was 5pm on Thursday and Wilanwan Yungrod had just finished her restaurant shift. She was going to have a belated New Year’s dinner with her husband and their toddler son Panuwit Wongyoo, who she called “Triton.” Strolling around the shopping mall beforehand with Triton’s hand in hers, Wilanwan heard two loud sounds.

Triton’s hand slipped out of hers. His body fell to the ground. It was only then Wilanwan realized her son had been shot. His killer finished robbing the nearby gold shop and then successfully escaped.

“I never thought that something like this would happen to me. Everything was so fast,” Wilanwan wrote online. “Papa and mama love you. Papa and mama are so sorry we couldn’t protect you. If there’s a next life, I hope you’ll be our son again … Rest in peace, our little angel.”

Families on Friday were mourning their loved ones killed during a bloody armed robbery Thursday at a gold shop at a Lopburi province mall. The masked robber has quickly risen to become public enemy No. 1 in Thailand after he killed three victims, including 2-year-old Triton, a security guard and a shop employee.

A THB200,000 reward has been offered to anyone who knows the whereabouts of the man responsible for the carnage.

Pratoom Mangmee, grandmother of slain employee Thidarat Tongtip, told reporters that she took care of her granddaughter since she was very young.

“As a grandmother, I never think that my own granddaughter will die before I do,” Pratoom said. “She often told me, ‘Walk carefully, grandma, don’t fall.’ I really miss her words now.”

Thidarat left her husband and a 4-year-old son behind.
